Educational and Social Events

Life Skills Education Programs

Life Skills Education programs are designed to provide information and education to help clients understand, compensate for and adjust to their vision loss; and most importantly, help them maintain independence in the home, family unit and community.  Life Skills Education can be provided one-on-one to individuals in their homes or to groups through monthly Lunch and Learn sessions.

Sessions include education and training on pertinent issues such as eye health education, low vision and adaptive product information, health and wellness education (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity, etc.), availability of community resources, emergency preparedness, first-aid, sensory development, stress management, self-esteem building, self-advocacy, banking options, crime prevention and other related topics.

Social Events

We know how important it is for our blind and visually impaired clients to remain active and connected to others.  We offer an array of Social/Recreation Events that are adapted for our clients. Each client and one guide may attend free of charge. Also, if needed, we will arrange free transportation for clients (Luzerne County residents only) to most of our Social Events.

Bingo Dinners

We host monthly Bingo Dinners where we provide a meal followed by several games of Bingo.  We use large print and Braille Bingo cards and have plenty of helpers on hand to assist our clients if need be.

Book Club

We have an active Book Club that meets once a month.  Participants all read a digital audio version of a book and meet over coffee and snacks to discuss the book.  Although the Book Club is always eager to welcome new members, clients do not have to be members of Book Club to receive digital audio books. For more information on how to sign up for digital audio books call Kristen at 570-693-3555 ext. 222.

Annual Holiday Party and Summer Picnic

Each December, we celebrate the holidays with our clients at the Annual Arline Phillips Holiday Party.  It’s a fun evening for everyone to get dressed up and head out for dinner and some holiday entertainment.

In the summer, we hold our Annual Picnic.  Clients and their guides are treated to a true barbecue with a great meal, fun games and live entertainment.
